The Tension Band Internal Fixation in Fracture of Patella

Abstract
The fracture of patella should be treated properly because it involves the articular surf-ace of knee joint.
The treatment of fracture of patella varies in accordance with type of fracture.

The principle of tension band internal fixation is to counteract the tensile forces, which is acting across the fracture site and convert them into compressive forces.
We have experienced 24 cases of fracture of patella, treated with Tension-Band technique from Mar. 1971 to Mara 1981 and obtained following results:

1. The peak age group was fourth & sixth decades. (54%)
2. The ratio of male to female was three to one.

3. As post-operative immobilization, applied long leg splint in almost of cases.

4. The average duration of immobilization was two weeks.

5. The radiological bony union was obtained on post-operative sixth week.

6. The mean time of partial & total weight bearing was post-operative fourth & fifth week, respectively.
7. The mean duration of restoration of knee joint motion was three months.
